With aspirations of being an animator, sixteen-year-old Nivi Nash thought she knew all about fairy tales. Take one beautiful damsel in distress, add a charming hero, and don’t forget a cackling villain. Throw in some pretty colors, a few songs, and mix well. But caught in a real one, she learns the hero—though still hot—isn’t always charming, the story far from pretty, and the villain absolute evil. On the run for her life in a stolen SUV, she isn’t worried about her beauty, but happily ever after? Yes, she wants that the most. It means she’ll live. The kiss always at the end of these tales? Most of the time, okay maybe half of the time, the thought of that lip lock is far, far away where these stories are supposed to be. But tied to a stake on the side of a snowy mountain, the thought of her not-so-charming hero’s kiss burns away the reality of the knife hovering above her skin. Appropriate for grade nine and up.

I first discovered the writing of Jean Haus when I downloaded her free short story Sleeping Handsome, and was immediately in love with her writing style. I quickly added the rest of her books to my Goodreads TBR list. How incredibly lucky was I, when the author contacted me and asked me if I would like to add those books to my review list!! Unfortunately it's only now that I have managed to get to Snow, Blood, and Envy!! And all I can say is WOW!!!This is a retelling of Snow White with lots of modern twists and turns. There are no castles, but a high rise apartment building. There are no seven dwarves, but we do have the butthead brothers. Our Prince charming Jai, doesn't ride along on horseback, but he does ride in from Chinatown on his motorbike!!
Nivi moves in with her dad and her new stepmother Mali following the death of her mum. It isn't long before Nivi realises that someone is after her. Enter Jai. And the action begins!!
This is a book that every time I was forced to put it down I seriously couldn't wait for the time when I could get back to it!! It was so full of action that I just couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I couldn't read it fast enough!! We have betrayal, love, action, murder and suspense. Throw in some kick ass fighting scenes and even an Asian gang!! The characters are all awesome, whether they are the one's you love or the ones you hate. The writing is fantastic and everything is incredibly well paced.
So would I recommend Snow, Blood, and Envy? You betcha!! This is one fantastic read!!!

Snow Blood and Envy Jean Haus 9781469932460 Books Reviews
This was a great story. There are no dwarves here, just young people struggling to survive. An interesting blend of ancient rites and modern day struggles. A great read!
" '...and lastly, though unimportant, your name,' she says with an exulant tone. 'Some tales are based on truth. The name never matched before.' She cackles again. 'Unitl now.'...Much too late I understand....In Latin, it means Snow White."
This was a great, fast-paced book. I could not put it down! I was drawn in by the character, Nivea. I enjoyed this book!!!
Had potential but couldn't keep me interested all throughout the book half way through i was thinking of the two bags of Cheetos or cili cheese fries i could have bought with what i bought this book. In all honesty i didn't really feel the emotion or attraction in Jai - truly sad cuz he had potential. If ur a snow white fanatic u might like the book more than i though.
This book was very interesting in that it provided a different look into the Snow White tale. It wasn't like any other Snow White story I've read. The plot takes place in today's modern world instead of the more traditional plots where kings and queens ruled the lands. It was a nice change. There were a lot of grammatical errors, but that didn't take away from how interested the book kept me. It was fast paced and creeped me out at times. I really liked this book! I recommend it to anyone who loves the Snow White fairy tale.
Nivi is getting a new mom- unfortunately she is much older than she looks. Soon Nivi finds she is drawn into a world where her new mom covets her and is trying to kill her, yet no one will believe her. Nivi is on the run with a handsome and caring prince charming, but he might not be enough to stop everything even if he does believe her.
It has a modern setting- the author does a great job integrating everything into a very modern day NY without making it seem excessively fantasy to do so. This was more an urban fantasy retelling of the story- which was a nice sping
But it was a bit predictable- being that it is the tale of snow white- you kind of know how it will end. I liked it but was just waiting to see when she would win in the end. It kills some of the suspense.
It wasn't a bad book, but it was predictable. If you can live with knowing it is a fairy tale with a happily ever after, then I can recommend this to you.
What an awesome surprise! I first stumbled upon this author through her novella Sleeping Handsome and downloaded it because it was free. I loved the story & characters so much, I decided to give this book a try. I'm very glad I did.
It's a great take on a classic fairytale with action, romance, and some humor. I love the relationship between Nivi and Jai, it was perfectly paced and no instalove. A total surprise for me was how attention was brought to some truly sad situations people can end up in, but it was done in a way that wasn't dark or depressing. It gave the book depth, made the characters more real and the story more believable and less fairytale. There were some grammatical errors, but very few. I know this bothers some readers, but it shouldn't stop you from trying the book.
I have had a lot of trouble lately getting sucked in by reviews flooded with 5 stars only to be EXTREMELY disappointed with the book and left to assume the reviewers were friends of the author. I am happy to say this author earned every star I gave her. I just downloaded her third book and I can't wait to get started!
Like some others, I first found Jean Haus through a free version of her short book, "Sleeping Handsome," and also like those others, I loved that story. At first I didn't realize this was the same author but just got caught up in the story. And get caught up I did! I immediately connected with Nivi, the main character. I've always approved of strong female leads and Nivi was great - scared and vulnerable but willing to take risks to dig for the information she needed. Not Superwoman, but not a meek lamb, either.
My only complaint about the book was some editing issues. It might have been just a mess-up on my download, but the print in the first chapter kept jumping from small to large a few times so I had to keep adjusting my font size. Not major, but distracting. Also a few repeated words that were a minor distraction.
Still, all in all I would definitely recommend this book to others. I love how Haus melds a cautiously building young romance with danger and adventure. Many authors try to achieve that but not all are successful.
