San Francisco attorney Mike Webster does not lose medical-malpractice cases. But his stellar reputation and faith are put to the test when he agrees to defend Dr. Johanna Anderson, a brilliant and beautiful psychologist. Jo is accused of failing to prevent the death of Seth Bell, a senator's son she was treating with a revolutionary technology-assisted therapy called the Mind's Eye. The controversial technique provides insights into what patients are thinking and feeling and determines whether they're telling the truth - so why didn't it detect that Seth was suicidal?
As the case unfolds, a shadowy firm, Horizon Finance, sees a golden opportunity to profit by seizing the Mind's Eye and auctioning it to intelligence services around the world. And Horizon will stop at nothing - not even murder - to succeed. As the danger escalates, Mike and Jo feel the heat of a mutual attraction. But when Mike's loyal paralegal, Val, unearths evidence that could blow the case apart, Mike realizes he stands to lose much more than just a verdict.
Death in the Mind Eye (Audible Audio Edition) Rick Acker Alexander Cendese Brilliance Audio Books
It’s been seven years since Rick Acker’s last book and I have truly missed his stories. His legal thrillers take unique parts of the legal system and turn them into inventive stories. Mixed in with the legal elements are strong ethical dilemmas and potentially far reaching consequences should the hero and/or heroine fail. “Death in the Mind’s Eye” continues this trend, having all these features, and making it a great choice for fans of suspense and legal dramas. While there are many strong aspects to this story, my favorite is the portions that deals with the cutting edge technology, Mind’s Eye. I love books that explore ethical dilemmas involving revolutionary and potentially beneficial technology. Rick does a great job of walking the reader through both sides of the issue and truly leaves a lot for them to consider. What is presented certainly has an unsettling side to it, but it is handled in such a way that it is not immediately obvious whether the risks are worth the rewards.
I like how the characters are written in this book. Though I didn’t love all of them, the unsettled feelings I had towards some of the characters is a strength of this book. It was hard to know for sure who could be trusted. There was enough gray to keep the reader just a little off balance. However, the consequence of the characters not being 100% likeable, is that it’s a little hard to become emotionally invested their cause.
“Death in the Mind’s Eye” has some nice twists and surprises. Unfortunately, one of the main twists I figured out very early, which was a little disappointing. There is also one scene towards the end that is a little unbelievable. It’s possible that the events have happened in reality and this scene falls under the category that truth is stranger than fiction. If this scene didn’t set off a chain of other events, it wouldn’t bother me. However, it is a pivotal scene and it didn’t work well for me.
Legal novels are known for their courtroom drama and the oftentimes bickering and contentious relationship between lawyers and judges. I love that this book creates a different environment. Instead of opposing lawyers who dislike each other and are bitter rivals, Mike and Tim respect each other. Additionally, the judge is neutral, fair, and appears to be making a concerted effort to protect the legal proceedings. It was a refreshing change from the normal underhanded dealings seen in legal dramas. I also liked that when rules were bent, there were repercussions. Again, a nice change from the lawyers being as criminal as the people they represent and getting away with it.
Overall I enjoyed “Death in the Mind’s Eye”. The characters are relatable and the story is certainly engaging. The technology is definitely the highlight and the type of content I always enjoy in Rick’s books. For readers looking for a strong legal thriller that’s just a little outside the norm for the genre, this is a great choice. I’m looking forward to Rick’s next book. Hopefully it won’t be another seven year wait!

Death in the Mind Eye (Audible Audio Edition) Rick Acker Alexander Cendese Brilliance Audio Books Reviews
Too religious. Christian writer
A great read!!!! Really intriguing plot, and great suspense. This is really a hard book to put down.
I had only read one before, but now he is one of my favorite authors
If you enjoy a good clean exciting legal thriller you will want to read all of Rick Acker's books. This one had a different twist then his previous books. Real page turner and highly recommend.
As in the book, people greet this new technology with excitement and hope but it's dependent on those using it. Human emotion cam always get in the way of sound judgement. Great plot twists.
I won this on a goodreads.com giveaway.
I have read several of this author's books. Every one of them have been great. A good story with a lot of mystery. The characters were interesting and kept me guessing until the end. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy a great mystery.
***I received this book via the Goodreads Giveaway program. This did not influence my review***
I was super excited to receive this book. The description intrigued me, and I was eager to see what would transpire. The author did not disappoint.
The plot has many twists and turns that were logical and fit well with the overall story arch. I liked Jo, I liked Mike, I liked Val.
The chapters are quite short and each features the perspective of one character. Most of the book is story-driven rather than character driven. The reader is given all of the information needed so the plot twists are true surprises.
Occasionally, we don't get to hear or see details, which is slightly annoying. For example, we know two characters have a conversation, but the author only says they discuss the details and that's it. It works, but it's not my favorite way to tell stories.
The last five percent of the book is an afterward. Normally I wouldn't like something like this, but in this case, it made me enjoy Mike's character even more. I felt like the afterward really settled any uncertainty with this character and was a great way to end the book.
Readers who like mysteries and good plot twists will enjoy this book. It's also a quick read.
